I went to a ‘ladies group’ talk a while ago and although I was looking forward to meeting some of my friends there I must admit that I wasn’t looking forward very much to the scheduled talk called MAF or ‘Mission Aviation Fellowship’… I am not too interested in aeroplanes or the types of missions that they might embark on so all in all I was quite prepared to be board up until the tea and biscuits came around… However, I most certainly wasn’t prepared for the wonderful and inspiring talk that was presented and I certainly had no idea of the breathtaking, humanitarian work that is undertaken by the MAF.

A bit of Spring Sparkle

Although we have had some pretty grim weather here in the east of England of late that is no reason to be downhearted. Inclement weather means we have to spend more time indoors than is good for us however, don’t become glum or lethargic take this opportunity to use this ‘indoor’ time to bring some sunshine into your living areas. Dull, damp weather makes everything look dreary and depressing so go get your favourite cleaning products and give your house or flat a really good spring sparkle.

Saving water

Although April is doing it’s best to provide us with the weather associated with it, we are still in a state of drought. Throughout the country rivers and streams are running low and many of our reservoirs are lower than is healthy for our lovely green and pleasant land. It doesn’t do us any good hearing that most of our water providing companies are allowing leaks and damaged pipes to go unchecked and unrepaired for weeks and months on end, meaning that hundreds of litres of water are being wasted continuously. However that should no make us throw our hands in the air and join the band of water wasters, so what can we do to help preserve our precious water? There are more people in this country using and wasting water than there are leaks so if each and every one of us took it upon ourselves to save some water we could put the water companies to shame so… What exactly can we do on a simple day to day level to save water? Here are just a few suggestions.

Small is beautiful

The best way to watch your weight is to watch what you eat instead. Going on a restricted ‘diet’ is not usually that successful because as soon as you come off the diet, you will almost certainly gain back any weight you might have lost. So… a more positive way to diet is to eat what you normally do but have smaller portions, then you are not so likely to get bored and go back to your old way of eating.

Giving A pleasure or a nightmare

It’s not only on Mothers day that we are due to give our nearest and dearest a gift; we are also expected to produce a present on birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and on all the other special days that our family and friends celebrate. Giving is great but is it costing you an absolute arm and leg? What if you are not that financially well heeled and gift giving becomes a financial nightmare? My advice is to stop – draw breath – and change tack. Think practical… 1. Only give gifts to the people who really matter to you as the others don’t really matter. 2. Don’t try to compete financially if you can’t, only spend what you can realistically afford. 3. Anyone who is offended by a less expensive gift from you will stop giving to you, releasing you from having to give an obligatory return. 4. Given with care and love - is a less expensive gift less worthy of receiving? No I don’t think so. What really matters is the meaning behind the gift you give or receive and the love that accompanies it.

Mothering Sunday Spare a thought

Mothering Sunday is coming round again and the shops are bursting with mother’s day cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts of all kinds. Such a lovely day, when originally, we were released from our work to go back to worship God in our ‘Mother’ church, and would gather bunches of wild flowers from the hedgerows to give to our mothers who perhaps, we had not seen for many months.

Macrobiotics for strong bones

According to Maria Serrano, Chairperson of the Macrobiotics Association of Great Britain, osteopenia is a condition where the human bone becomes lacking in important minerals and bone mass, it is not an illness but it is a wake-up call. Lifestyle modifications are the most important part of the prevention and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis. The life style changes necessary to right this condition include a diet that is rich in calcium, Vitamin D and minerals; avoid food that consumes minerals like alcohol, sugar, caffeine and smoking.

We await with anticipation the snow that has been threatening to come for the last few days. The temperature has been slowly dropping and it was minus 3 degrees according to my car’s temperature gauge this morning only rising to minus 1 degree by the time we reached the local shops. It was so cold and still this morning, that walking around our local market place was like strolling around inside a huge refrigerator store.

Money Money Money

Oh – dear it looks as though it is going to be another year of doom and gloom from a financial point of view. We can't pick up a newspaper, turn on the telly news or read the Google computer news without someone telling us that we are all going to be poorer during the next year. Of course if you have seriously blown your budget on your credit card over the festive holiday then I am afraid that you may suffer unnecessarily from a shortfall of those precious ‘readies’, and looking back at what you bought was it all worth breaking the bank for? All I can suggest is that whatever debt you find yourself in, it is best to clear it up as soon as possible which will help you to avoid having to pay lots of unnecessary interest. Does your bank or Credit Card Company love you or hate you? – If you are like me – I never go overdrawn and never take out loans, so fortunately I never have to waste even more of my money paying out interest. However, if you are prone to using money that doesn’t belong to you then unfortunately you are paying for the pleasure of borrowing and blowing someone else’s cash, however, the money-lending companies will love, even adore you.

Boom or bust a bit longer

Here’s a bit of a different slant on the question of added body fat gained after the Christmas-time feasting. Not everyone of course, but the majority of us have to put our hands up to overeating during the Christmas and New Year period. It’s not always just the over indulgence in food, but added to that are the celebrations and parties that almost all of us attend at this time of the year, the extra drink, not necessarily alcohol, but juices, party pops etc., and of course the fact that we seem to take less exercise than usual. Even those of us who went for a walk after Christmas dinner tended to take a leisurely stroll as opposed to a power walk or the type of walking stride we adopt when we have an appointment slotted in-between a busy scheduled day. However, I have always found that once back to our everyday normal eating and exercise pattern, the excess pounds just tend to melt away within a few weeks, so my advice is, rather than give the left-over chocolates, cakes, crisps and biscuits away to someone else to get fat on, just gradually eat them up over the next few weeks and enjoy. When finished, DO NOT buy any more and just go back to your normal eating and exercise regime and lo and behold by the time the buds of spring start to swell, you will be your old self again (but don’t tell anyone I told you - eh?)

Two of the biggest West Ham fans I know are my son David and my grandson Callis. Only just gone off to live in the USA, I am sure they will both be delighted to know that their favourite football team, West Ham won 3-1 against Derby on Saturday 26 of Nov. I have to be honest here and say that although I didn't join Nolan, Cole or Noble by kicking a ball into Derby’s net, I did enhance the ‘Children’s’ area of the Ba Gua chart in the room that used to be the boys bedroom, so I can't tell you how delighted I was to hear Alan proudly announce that West Ham had won after a late kick off.
